Students will soon be able to listen in on Student Government Senate meetings due to a partnership between WXUT and SG.
The partnership aims not only to reach out to more students by making the meetings more accesible but to also improve the negative image some students may have of SG.
Student Government President Matt Rubin said he is unsure whether the meetings will be broadcast live or recorded and uploaded to the internet for later use.
“We’re just excited to have the commitment; it’s a matter of working things out during the next couple of days,” he said.
Rubin said broadcasting the meetings will change the way the SG meetings run.
“You will have to literally get up and walk to the podium and speak into the microphone just like a real senate,” he said. “And if you don’t do that, nobody will be able to hear you.”
In order to replace the Student Speaks forums, SG will also now start allowing students to come address the Senate on any topic they wish for the first three minutes of the meeting.
Though the main driving factor of the partnership is to make students more aware of what SG does, Rubin said another huge factor is getting rid of some senators’ “bad behavior.”
“We have had a lot of problems with inappropriate behavior in the past, which has led to a lot of people disrespecting us which is not good,” Rubin said. “By putting people on the internet and radio, hopefully it will help improve their behavior.”
“One of my biggest hopes in this is that they will come out and participate in our new open floor where they will be able to speak their mind and be heard by every senator on campus and start a discussion and dialogue,” Rubin said.
The meetings will be recorded starting with SG’s first meeting, which will be held tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. in room 2592 of the Student Union Building.
