Hug a Vegetarian Day

Puppy hurling teen identified

The star of an infamous Youtube.com video depicting the young woman laughing as she hurls whimpering puppies into a river has been caught. According to PETA’s German affiliate, Bosnian police have identified the cause of this international outrage. If convicted, she will face a fine of $6,400 according to a newly-adopted Bosnian animal-protection law.

Veggie burger now available at Denny’s

According to a press release, “Denny’s is excited to offer a delicious, better-for-you veggie burger in over 1,500 restaurants any time of the day,” said Minh Huynh, Denny’s Product Marketing Manager. The burger is “thick and juicy…and comes topped with spinach, tomato, and grilled mushrooms, plus a side of balsamic vinaigrette,” said Peta2 Blogger Ryan. It also comes with pepper jack cheese, but, if you are vegan, it is possible to get it without cheese; it is also possible to add other vegetables, such as sautéed onions.

Elephants never forget campaign

Could you forget being beaten? Or being chained up for days at a time? How about being kidnapped from your mom? This is reality for elephants used for people’s entertainment — and elephants never forget. And now that you know the truth — can you? So far, Peta2 has collected over 200,000 hand signatures and over 13,000 online signatures. Peta2 has also received support from such notable bands as Silverstein, Sum 41, Attack Attack! and Kottonmouth Kings, among others. In addition, 17,500 messages were sent to zoos, circuses and other companies who abuse elephants asking that the animals be sent to sanctuaries. North Utah Valley Animal Shelter, NUVAS, Sells Animals to Labs

This year, more than 50 dogs have been sold by NUVAS to the University of Utah for invasive and deadly experiments. After being purchased the dogs had holes cut into their chests and necks and pacemakers implanted into their hearts in order to induce irregular heartbeats; the dogs were then killed and dissected. For more information and to lobby NUVAS to stop, visit http://features.peta2.com/NUVAS/default.asp?c=11.

NASA’s plans to expose monkeys to radiation

NASA announced its plan to fund a $1.75 million project where 30 squirrel monkeys will be subjected to deadly amounts of radiation and then be secluded in steel cages repeadidly, for years so the organization can measure the effects of such radiation. However, because of the biological differences, the results will not be definitive when trying to determine the possible effects on humans. For more information and to encourage NASA to dissolve these plans visit https://secure.peta.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=2663.

Animals being ground up alive

There is currently a video on Youtube.com showing the Hy-Line Hatchery, a major company in the egg industry, “disposing” of “useless” male chicks because they cannot produce eggs. The industry gets rid of the chicks by throwing them into grinders while they are still alive. This “standard procedure” is used for commercial eggs as well as free-range and organic stock. After the wave of international outrage related to the video of “Twisted girl throws puppies in river,” it is surprising that there hasn’t been much publicity related to this case.
